Rhode Island Farm Incubator 501c3
Since formation, the organization has accomplished a number of goals – including the purchase of a 91 acre parcel to develop a start up organic vegetable, herb, mushroom, and flower farm - as well as to house a rural development collaborative.
In late 2018 construction was completed on farm infrastructure - including a 1,300 SF packinghouse, 12,000 CF refrigerated storage, 12,000 CF cli-mate controlled storage for dry bulk product, 2,150 SF equipment building with workshop, 1,300 SF office and floral workshop, and a 2,200 SF greenhouse. This infrastructure adds critical capacity to the region’s local food system by allowing processing and storage of produce at a scale seldom seen on-farm.
The Incubator now enters a second phase of development:
To diversify the operations of the 501c3 by incorporating new skills (both from existing and new partner members) so that a more comprehensive set of rural economic development services are available to those we serve.
To develop specific rural financial services combining existing and new knowledge on the needs of small rural businesses and communities.
Revive historical social, biological and economic practices that will create resiliency and reintroduce valuable lost knowledge to small cities and towns.
Conduct research, trials and both on-farm and value-added food development that will lead to opportunities for additional for-profit rural enterprises.
